(Harris County, TX) The Harris County Office of Homeland Security & Emergency Management (OHSEM) extends its sympathy for the devastation and loss of life in Haiti following the massive earthquake that struck that nation on Jan. 12.
The 7.0 magnitude earthquake has claimed hundreds of thousands of lives. Reports say it will take several days to know the full extent of the disaster.
Desperately needed aid from around the world is making its way into Haiti and humanitarian efforts are underway assisting people with food, water, temporary shelter, medical services, and more.
However, as with any major disaster, governments are not able to provide 100 percent of what is needed. U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Secretary Janet Napolitano encouraged the American people to donate what funds they can afford to reputable organizations that are coordinating and providing emergency response.
Individuals wishing to offer immediate financial assistance may do so by texting "HAITI" (42484) to "90999," which will donate $10 to the American Red Cross. The amount will be charged to your cell phone bill.
